About Chris Livanos

I am an instructor with a passion for all aspects of yoga.

I teach regular, weekly public yoga classes  at several locations in the Madison area.  Please see my teaching page for details.

My workshops and teacher training modules integrate the different limbs of yoga, and I love to explore how our asana practice fits into the broader yoga tradition and enhances our daily lives.

As a tenured Associate Professor at UW, Madison, I have over 15 years of experience teaching subjects including Sanskrit literature, Bhakti poetry, and classics of yogic wisdom such as the Bhagavad Gita.  My asana workshops incorporate my background in the myths and spiritual traditions out of which modern yoga developed to give a fuller understanding of how our physical practice relates to all parts of our lived experience of yoga.

In my teacher training modules, I bring together my background as a classically trained scholar (Ph.D., Harvard University, 2001) with my experience as an asana instructor and daily practitioner.
